Categorical Redistribution in Winner-Take-All Markets∗

چکیده
This paper constructs a simple model of pair-wise tournament competition to investigate categorical redistribution in winner-take-all markets. We consider two forms of redistribution: category-sighted, where employers are allowed to use categorical information in pursuit of their redistributive goals; and category-blind, where they are not. It is shown that the equilibrium category-sighted redistribution scheme involves a constant handicap given to agents in the disadvantaged category. Equilibrium category-blind redistribution creates a unique semi-separating equilibrium in which a large pool of contestants exerts zero effort, and this pool is increasing in the aggresiveness of the redistribution goal. ∗This paper was inspired by many stimulating discussions with Sherwin Rosen. Inefficient Excess Entry in an Experimental Winner-Take-All Market
"Winner-Take-All"-markets, i.e. markets in which the relative and not the absolute performance is decisive, have gained in importance. Such markets have a tendency to provoke inefficiently many entries. We investigate the functioning of such markets with the help of experiments and show that there are even more inefficient entries than predicted by the Nash equilibrium. Moreover, this effect in...

Whom to hire, promote, admit into elite universities, elect, or issue government contracts to are all determined in a tournament-like (winner-take-all) structure. We consider two forms of affirmative action: group-sighted, where employers are allowed to use group identity...
متن کاملA Decentralized Online Sortition Protocol
We propose a new online sortition protocol which is decentralized. We argue that our protocol has safety, fairness, randomness, non-reputation and openness properties. Sortition is a process that makes random decision and it is used in competitions and lotteries to determine who is the winner. In the real world, sortition is simply done using a lottery machine and all the participa...
